Biography

 

Since completing his service as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of California in 1984, Bob has been retained by companies and individuals in three areas of principal concern to them: white collar criminal defense, intellectual property and complex commercial and securities actions.  Bob was a partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati for 23 years, serving as Chair of the Litigation Department from 2000-2004.  He joined Quinn Emanuel in 2007.

 

Bob is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.  He was named in the 2007 Best Lawyers in America for "Bet-the-Company Litigation" and is recognized in Chambers USA.  He has previously served as a Delegate to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference; as Chair of the Northern District of California Magistrate Judge Merit Selection Committee and is currently a member of the Judicial Advisory Committee for Northern California, which screens and recommends candidates for United States District Court.






Notable Representations


Represented a Fortune 200 company indicted for alleged violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.  The case was tried in federal court in San Francisco, resulting in an acquittal.


Represented an individual in trial of federal income tax evasion charges arising from the construction of the San Jose Transit Mall.  The individual was acquitted.


Represented the largest independent supplier of voicemail systems in a high stakes trial in which a jury invalidated three patents which, if valid and infringed, would have stopped shipments.


Represented one of the largest independent software companies in the world in a trial of license dispute that threatened 80 percent of the company's revenue.  The jury verdict affirmed the client's position.

 

Represented plaintiff real estate developer in trial against municipality for breach of contract, resulting in $30 million verdict for plaintiff.


Led a team of lawyers in litigating and then resolving 17 patent lawsuits pending around the world between two large semiconductor companies.


Led a team of lawyers in litigating a series of cases on behalf of an individual whose patents claim the basic technology for the 56k modem.


Litigated private and class antitrust actions for public medical device company relating to patent pool.


Represented companies and individuals in securities and antitrust class actions, intra-corporate disputes and a range of other business litigation.  In these cases, clients have ranged from technology companies and their boards of directors, to a NYSE-listed consumer products company, to a hedge fund and, on a number of occasions, law firms.
