Biography

 

John Potter serves as the Co-Chair of the Firm's White Collar and Corporate Investigations Practice Group.  The American Bar Association has selected Mr. Potter to chair the ABA White Collar Committee for the Northern District of California.  Mr. Potter has been recognized as one of the leading lawyers in the United States by Chambers, USA; Who's Who Legal; and The Legal 500.


Mr. Potter's practice is focused on white collar criminal matters and complex civil litigation, particularly in the areas of securities fraud, antitrust, and health care litigation.  A former federal prosecutor, Mr. Potter has conducted numerous internal investigations at the request of corporations, boards of directors, audit committees and special committees.  Mr. Potter has defended corporations and individuals in SEC and DOJ investigations throughout the United States, and has represented corporate clients in shareholder derivative suits, securities litigation, and false claims actions.  Mr. Potter has extensive trial experience and has litigated several high profile cases.

Represented a leading technology company in a SEC investigation and related derivative litigation.

Represented a Fortune 100 energy company in connection with a Department of Justice investigation into alleged market manipulation.

 

Represented a Fortune 500 technology company in an internal investigation related to the misappropriation of trade secrets.

 

Represented officers and directors of the world's largest self storage company in connection with a shareholder derivative lawsuit.

 

Represented a telecommunications carrier in a securities action brought by a class of shareholders.

Represented the president of a French bank in a criminal investigation related to the takeover of MGM/United Artist by Giancarlo Paretti and the subsequent collapse of the studio, resulting in billions of dollars in losses.
