Biography Before joining Quinn Emanuel, Stephen A. Swedlow founded his own law firm of Swedlow & Associates which later merged with Korein Tillery in Chicago. Mr. Swedlow has fifteen years of trial and appellate experience representing clients ranging from public corporations to plaintiff classes in complex, sophisticated, and multiparty litigation. His practice in recent years has focused on complex plaintiff contingency trials on behalf of both consumer classes and businesses in the areas of pharmaceutical products, health care, intellectual property and new technology/privacy issues.
Swedlow has served as lead counsel in jury trials and arbitrations, spearheaded large, multiple firm litigation efforts, and argued important appeals, including several before state Supreme Courts. He practices primarily in the areas of intellectual property, class action, and complex commercial litigation. He previously led the trial team that obtained a $10 billion trial verdict against Philip Morris USA in Illinois state court—the largest trial verdict in the history of Illinois. Swedlow has also been retained by foreign governments to provide guidance and expertise with respect to cost recovery actions.
Notable Representations Lead counsel for the Multidistrict Litigation on behalf of Plaintiffs in In Re: Celexa and Lexapro Marketing and Sales Practices Litig., 1:09-md-02067-NMG (D. Mass).
Lead negotiating counsel on behalf of plaintiff third party payor ("TPP") health insurance companies in class action litigation against GlaxoSmithKline concerning the prescription drug Paxil. These negotiations culminated in GSK agreement to reimburse third-party payors up to $40 million for their costs in insuring purchases paid for by the parents of minors prescribed Paxil or Paxil CR.
Obtained settlement of a nationwide class of consumers of pharmaceutical products requiring defendant manufacturer to reimburse up to $63.8 million.
Lead counsel for Plaintiff class in a wage and hour class action on behalf of all hourly employees of Sport Chalet resulting in certified class settlement for over 3000 current and former employees.
Trial counsel in Price v. Philip Morris for an 8-week trial resulting a $10.1 billion judgment entered against Philip Morris—the largest verdict in the history of the Illinois court system.
Provided invited testimony before Illinois Senate Executive Committee regarding proposed bond cap legislation and was successful in defeating this legislative initiative in Illinois.
Argued the appeal of Price v. Philip Morris before the Illinois Supreme Court.
Argued before the State Supreme Court in Barbara's Sales Inc., v. Intel Corp., 879 N.E.2d 910 (Ill. 2007).
Retained by the Canadian Government Competition Bureau with respect to an ultimately successful enforcement action and settlement with private industry participants.
Retained to file suit on behalf of the Nigerian Federal and State Governments for health care cost recovery actions
