Biography

 

Ms. Taggart's practice includes a wide variety of complex commercial litigation, for both defendants and plaintiffs, including patents, unfair competition, securities, antitrust, contracts, trade secrets, and discrimination law.  Recently, she has specialized in patent infringement cases in the cellular telephone industry through her work for Nokia and Freedom Wireless.  She was named in 2007 as a "Rising Star" by Southern California Super Lawyer .






Notable Representations

 

Represents Nokia in its worldwide litigation against Qualcomm over patents in the cellular telephone industry, including three patent cases, one state contract case, two arbitrations, and one ITC investigation in the United States alone, and many more throughout the world.

 

Defended IBM against contract and trade secret misappropriation allegations involving database management operating software.  Also defended IBM against class unfair competition claims under California's 17-200 statute.

 

Represents Harman International in various cases involving antitrust, contract, and employment law, including defending Harman's subsidiary JBL Professional against Sherman Act and state law claims brought against the music product industry.

 

Successfully defended Gateway in unfair competition class action involving printer speed advertising.

 

Represented Freedom Wireless in a suit for patent infringement against twelve defendants for infringement of its patents on prepaid wireless telephone systems and methods. The trial lasted 15 weeks and we obtained a $128 million jury verdict entered against several wireless telephone carriers. The verdict is the largest ever awarded in Massachusetts, and was the eighth biggest verdict awarded in the U.S. that year. The case recently settled for a lump sum payment of $87 million, plus on-going royalties which are expected to generate an additional $50 million.

 

Represented Time Warner Cable against claims of securities fraud .  Obtained complete dismissal of all claims and an affirmance on appeal to the Ninth Circuit.

 

Represented the Oasis Christian Center in an employment and contract dispute, obtaining summary judgment and dismissal of all claims.

 

Represented plaintiff 1GlobalPlace--an internet start-up company that manages domain names--  defeating summary judgment of all claims against VeriSign.  Settled on the eve of trial.
