Insurance and Reinsurance Litigation

Quinn Emanuel’s Insurance and Reinsurance Litigation Group was recently chosen as an “Insurance Group of the Year” by leading publication, Law360.  The firm has long been recognized as a litigation powerhouse by several national publications.  We were among the top four (dubbed “the Fearsome Foursome”).  (See, Crain's New York Business, September 9, 2010; Law360, September 3, 2010.)  Last year, The American Lawyer ranked our firm as one of the top six litigation departments in the United States (See, The American Lawyer Litigation Department of the Year, January 2010).

Our Insurance and Reinsurance Litigation Group has its roots in our success acting as lead litigation counsel for American International Group, Inc. in its disputes with its former CEO Maurice R. Greenberg and his Starr Agencies, represented by Bois Schiller and Skadden Arps.  Group Co-Head Michael Carlinsky obtained three injunctions in our efforts to separate AIG from Greenberg’s Starr Agencies in disputes involving more than $1 billion of business.   Following those victories,  Co-Head, Jane Byrne, joined our firm from AIG, bringing over 20 years experience representing insurance companies in coverage and reinsurance matters.  She has been recognized as one of the top insurance litigators in New York by a leading global publication.  According to Chambers USA (2010) Ms. Byrne’s  "experience in insurance disputes and reinsurance work is widely praised in the market."
