Residency Details
This residency is open to emerging and mid-career artists working in all disciplines across Greater Los Angeles. For four months the artist-in-residence will be given a studio in the Quinn Emanuel Los Angeles office to support their existing practice or a new project as appropriate.
At the end of the residency an exhibition will be held to display the works of the artist and at least one work will be incorporated into the permanent collection. A supporting stipend will be provided, as well as materials allowance. Over the course of a year there will be 2 residency cycles, each with a four month residency and a subsequent exhibition in a location deemed appropriate for the work decided on between the artist and curator.
The residency will begin in October 2024 and will last 4 months.
The artist-in-residence will receive $5,000 a month over the course of four months for a total of $20,000. In addition, Quinn Emanuel will provide an allowance of up to $1,500 for purchase of art materials.
The artist-in-residence will be an artist working with a distinct and new voice, with clear mastery of their media of choice. Preference will be given to artists who are in the early or middle stages of their career. The selection committee is interested in giving opportunity and a platform to underrepresented artists.
The artist-in-residence will have access to an office to use as a studio at the Los Angeles location.
After the residency is completed, along with the direct help of curator Alexis Hyde, an exhibition will be mounted of the work in a place decided on. Sales of the work will be determined in conversation as well.

- Digital portfolio, submitted in a single PDF, highlighting up to 8 original works that represent the applicant’s style, quality, and practice over time. This should be not more than 10 images total in the file as we understand some works may require more than one picture.

What is the mission of this residency?
Quinn Emanuel offers a four-month studio residency for an emerging/underrepresented artist working in any medium. This is for artists working locally, in the greater Los Angeles area.
When is the Artist-in-Residence Program Application due?
All materials are due by 11:59 PM PST August 19, 2024. Please be aware we receive a high volume of applications during the last day of the application period which can cause server problems. To avoid this, please submit your application in advance of the deadline.
When does the residency begin and end?
The residency is four months long, beginning October 2024.
When does the corresponding show begin and end?
The exhibition of work will begin February 2025 and last one month.

Can I apply if I don’t live in the greater LA area?
This residency is for artists who live in the greater LA area only.
Will the Artist-in-Residence program be in person or remote?
In person. The Quinn Emanuel Los Angeles office is taking appropriate steps to keep employees and guests safe. The plan, which follows the CDC and OSHA guidelines, will implement various protocols to ensure safety.
What are the hours of the studio?
It is located in a 24/7 secure building with keycard access.
Is parking included?
Yes, if needed.
Do you accept late applications?
We cannot accept applications after the due date.
Is there a fee to apply?
There is no fee to apply to the Artist-in-Residence program.
Do you accept international applicants?
Yes, the program accepts applications from artists working locally. Please note, however, that Quinn Emanuel cannot provide visas, nor can it sponsor international applicants. All international artists in the residency program must secure their own visas prior to their arrival.
What kinds of documents does the application require?
A resume (or CV), and a proposal. No word documents please; these materials should be consolidated into a single PDF file not exceeding 20MB. In addition 8–10 images consolidated into one file or link location and/or links to applicable videos.
When will I hear back about my application?
Can I receive feedback or advice about my application?
We expect to receive hundreds of applications and, as a result, we are unable to provide individual feedback or advice.
How much does the residency award each artist?
The residency currently awards each artist a stipend of $20,000, paid out on a regular schedule over the course of four months. Material costs will also be covered up to $1,500 and there will be an exhibition where the choice to sell work is available and can be decided between the artist and Quinn Emanuel.
Do I have to work in a specific medium to apply?
No. Quinn Emanuel will accept applications from artists practicing in all mediums. However, please note that the studio is in an office building so nothing violating fire code may be permitted.
Do I need to have a specific project in mind before I apply?
No. You can apply with a portfolio of your works previously completed.
Can you tell me if I should apply?
Quinn Emanuel cannot advise you on your application.
Is there an education requirement for the residency?
No, there is no education requirement.
If I have a disability, how will the residency program accommodate me?
Quinn Emanuel recognizes that not all disabilities are visible and is willing to make accommodations based on the needs of the individual.
Does my application have to be in English?
Yes. Quinn Emanuel asks that all applicants submit their applications in English.

A selection committee appointed by curator Alexis Hyde and John Quinn.
I am a writer/musician/filmmaker/etc. Can I apply?
While this residency was designed with visual artists in mind, we are open to artists of all mediums.
