Rupert Goodway is Of Counsel in Quinn Emanuel’s London office. He specialises in complex litigation and arbitration, with an emphasis on civil fraud, financial litigation and shareholder disputes. He has a particular interest in disputes involving cryptocurrencies, blockchain and fintech companies.
Rupert has significant experience managing high-value disputes for multinational corporations, financial institutions and high-net-worth individuals spanning multiple jurisdictions, including in Eastern Europe, off-shore jurisdictions and the Middle East. He regularly advises on complex disputes with a civil fraud element requiring urgent interim relief including anti-suit injunctions, worldwide freezing injunctions, receiverships and Norwich Pharmacal orders. Rupert also has experience in a wide array of other practice areas and sectors, including white collar crime, sanctions, M&A, private equity, telecommunications, IT and mining.
Rupert’s arbitration experience includes acting on arbitrations under LCIA, UNICTRAL and SIAC rules.
In 2025, Rupert was ranked as a Leading Associate in Civil Fraud in the Legal 500 UK 2025 Edition described as being “completely on top of his cases”.
- Skywind Holdings Limited & Anor v Wilson & Ors - Acting for Skywind Holdings Limited in Commercial Court fraud proceedings valued at approximately £60 million, arising out of its acquisition of In Touch Games Limited, a regulated online gambling business.
- IBM United Kingdom Ltd v LzLabs GmbH & Ors (one of The Lawyer's Top 20 Cases of 2024) - Acting for IBM UK in landmark proceedings in the Technology and Construction Court concerning the alleged systematic reverse engineering of IBM's proprietary mainframe software by LzLabs in breach of its software licence agreement with IBM.
- Acting for the founder of a crypto market-making business in a shareholder dispute involving an unfair prejudice petition before the Company and Insolvency Court and whistleblowing claims before the Employment Tribunal.
- Acting for the FTX Recovery Trust in relation to a c. USD500m breach of warranty and fraud claim arising out of a series of English-law share purchase agreements in a Bitcoin mining company.
- Acting for minority shareholders in a Fintech company in a shareholder dispute and unfair prejudice petition before the Company and Insolvency Court.
- Acting for a founder of an AI cloud platform against their former co-founders in a claim for fraudulent misrepresentation relating to sale of his shares in the company.
- Acting for JSC Commercial Bank “PrivatBank” of Ukraine in various international disputes connected with the frauds allegedly perpetrated against the bank by its former owners, Igor Kolomoisky and Gennady Bogolyubov.
- Acting for LemFi in an unlawful interference claim against a competitor before the English High Court.
- Acting for a private equity investor in a shareholder dispute relating to a petrol forecourt business before the LCIA.
- Acting for two ultra-high net worth individuals in proceedings before the BVI court commenced by the family of their deceased business partner, involving serious allegations of fraud and forgery in connection with the settlement of assets spanning multiple jurisdictions into a BVI law governed trust.
- Acting for the FDIC in its competition law and fraud claims against the BBA, RBS, Lloyds, Deutsche Bank, Barclays, and UBS in relation to USD LIBOR manipulation in the English High Court.
- Acting for the sellers in an English-law governed share purchase agreement in a Singapore-seated SIAC arbitration worth in excess of USD500m.
