Zach’s practice focuses on appellate litigation and advising clients on novel legal issues. Zach has briefed cases on a wide range of subjects at all levels of the federal court system, including at the certiorari and merits stages in the U.S. Supreme Court. For instance, Zach has worked on appeals related to federal courts and civil procedure, the Commerce Clause, the First and Second Amendments, arbitration, and class-action defense. Zach also has experience litigating appeals in criminal matters, including successfully briefing the State of Oklahoma’s position in the U.S. Supreme Court as respondent in support of the retrial of then-death row inmate Richard Glossip, as well as representing Mark Meadows, former Chief of Staff to the President, in his appeal seeking removal of state charges to federal court. Recently, Zach worked on the mandamus proceedings in In re: Express Scripts, Inc., a Seventh Amendment case in which the Fourth Circuit unanimously ordered a jury trial.
Zach joined the firm after clerking for Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh on the U.S. Supreme Court. Before that, he clerked for Judge Michael H. Park on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Judge Dabney L. Friedrich on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and he practiced as an appellate-litigation associate at another firm.
Zach graduated summa cum laude in Statistics from Harvard University and earned his J.D. from Yale Law School, where he was an Articles Editor for the Yale Law Journal and a co-winner of the Morris Tyler Moot Court competition. Zach also has a specialized background in financial markets; between college and law school, he worked as an equity derivatives trader on an automated market making desk.
