Matthew Tse is of counsel and solicitor advocate in Quinn Emanuel’s London office. He joined the firm in 2019. He specialises in finance litigation, JV / M&A disputes, investment funds disputes, insolvency, tax litigation, financial regulation, and white collar investigations, with a focus on civil fraud. He has particular experience advising parties on disputes across the capital structure and management in distressed and turnaround situations.
Matthew also advises on media and information law, including reputation management, defamation and data breach response.
Matthew’s practice encompasses both litigation and arbitration (LCIA, ICSID, SIAC, HKIAC, ICC), with experience in matters involving jurisdictions including US federal and state courts, Israel, Switzerland, Jersey, the Isle of Man, Ukraine, the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Finland, Malta, Cyprus, Hong Kong, the DIFC and the Abu Dhabi Global Markets. Matthew also has particular experience representing UHNW individuals and businesses from China in international litigation and arbitration.
Recent experience include representing Palladium Hotel Group in their c. €500 million claim against Deutsche Bank regarding various exotic FX derivatives in the English High Court, as well as the ongoing c. $5 billion fraudulent trading and related claims in the Abu Dhabi Global Markets against Bank of Baroda and others arising out of the insolvency of NMC Healthcare.
Prior to joining Quinn Emanuel, Matthew practised at a leading Canadian law firm, and completed graduate studies in law and finance at the University of Oxford, where he graduated with the best overall performance in the class.
Matthew has completed all three levels of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program.

- Representing Ocean Freight Trident Master Offshore Fund Limited in claims in the Commercial Court against Marex Financial arising out of the forced liquidation of positions in freight forward agreements (FFAs)
- Representing JSC Commercial Bank “PrivatBank” of Ukraine in various international disputes connected with the frauds allegedly perpetrated against the bank by its former owners, Igor Kolomoisky and Gennady Bogolyubov
- Representing JSC Oschadbank in connection with its bilateral investment treaty arbitration claim against the Russian Federation arising out of the loss of the bank's assets and investments in Crimea following the illegal annexation of that territory.
- Representing Ukraine in bilateral investment treaty arbitration claims brought against it by ABH Holdings S.A.
- Advising a hedge fund in relation to offshore litigation arising out of the compulsory redemption of an investor
- Representing an Irish financial firm on disputes related to issues arising from the operation of ISLA GMSLA-governed securities lending transactions and the Double Taxation Treaty between Ireland and Finland
- Representing numerous hedge funds and private equity investors in connection with various types of disputes among portfolio companies, founders / management, LPs, and other stakeholders in distressed situations
