Quinn Emanuel is proud to announce a pro bono collaboration with the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts (ACLUM) in Commonwealth of Mass. v. Karen Read (SJC-13663).

Yesterday, the ACLUM submitted an amicus brief in connection with Read’s appeal to the highest court in Massachusetts—an appeal with implications for the constitutional rights of every defendant.  As explained by ACLUM managing attorney, Daniel McFadden, “The ACLU filed this brief to highlight serious constitutional concerns about the trial court’s process. Our core concern is what occurs when a viable question is raised regarding the outcome of the jury’s deliberations – and what processes will be employed by trial courts addressing similar circumstances in the future. Both federal and state law include fundamental protections against the burden of multiple prosecutions, and the ACLU seeks to assure that those rights are appropriately safeguarded for all defendants.”  Quinn partner, Michael Packard, shared, "We’re proud to be working with the ACLU of Massachusetts on this case, in which the prohibition of double jeopardy—a core Constitutional protection—is at stake."
