Brett J. Arnold

Brett Arnold is Of Counsel in Quinn Emanuel’s Silicon Valley office where his practice focuses on complex cases at every stage of litigation, from pre-dispute consultations through trial and appeal.  He has extensive experience litigating intellectual property and technology-related disputes, particularly those involving design patents, trademarks, trade dress, and trade secrets, as well as mobile apps and internet-based services.  He has also litigated a range of business disputes including claims of breach of contract, breach of the duty of loyalty, trade libel, tortious interference with contract, and unfair competition. 

A few recent notable matters for Mr. Arnold include representing Samsung in its design-patent and trade-dress “smartphone wars” with Apple from the district court to the U.S. Supreme Court, helping BlackBerry obtain an injunction against a competitor based on design and utility patents for smartphones, defeating a design patent claim against Harbor Freight related to automotive tools, and defeating a trademark claim at the pleading stage for Google. 

Mr. Arnold also provides pre-litigation consultation for companies looking to assess the strength of their design patent portfolios and to evaluate potential litigation risks from proposed product designs.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Arnold attended Harvard Law School where he graduated with honors after serving as an editor on the Harvard Law Review.  Mr. Arnold was also involved in the human rights clinic and volunteered at an international human rights organization.
