Jared Newton is a partner in Quinn Emanuel’s Washington, D.C. office. He joined the firm in 2011. His practice focuses on intellectual property disputes, including patent infringement, trade secret, and post-grant review proceedings. Jared has argued successfully in the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Federal District Court, the International Trade Commission, and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech and has applied his technical training to matters involving a wide range of technologies such as self-driving vehicles, radiotherapy systems, microprocessor design, mobile device software, and light-emitting diodes. Prior to and during law school, Jared worked as a patent examiner at the United States Patent & Trademark Office, focusing on mechanical and data processing technologies.

  • Represented Waymo LLC in a trade secret trial against Uber LLC related self-driving car technology. The case settled during trial and resulted in a favorable settlement for Waymo.
  • On behalf of EIZO Corporation, obtained summary judgment of invalidity for patent related to calibrating display screens for medical applications. Argued the appeal before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and won summary affirmance.
  • On behalf of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., argued a series of inter partes review hearings and obtained final written decisions invalidating competitor’s patents related to LTE technology that were asserted against Samsung in co-pending district court litigation. 
  • On behalf of SawStop LLC in a Section 337 investigation at the U.S. International Trade Commission, obtained an exclusion order barring the importation of competitor’s table saws found to infringe two asserted patents. Also obtained denial of institution against asserted patents in counterpart inter partes review proceedings.
  • Represented Varian Medical Systems in a Section 337 Investigation related to radiotherapy systems. The ALJ found a violation in favor of Varian and the case settled favorably prior to a final Commission determination.
  • Represented Cree Inc. in a Section 337 Investigation related to light-emitting diodes and related products. The ALJ found a violation in favor of Cree and ordered sanctions against the opposing side for discovery abuse.  The case settled favorably prior to a final Commission determination.
  • Represented HTC in a Section 337 Investigation against Apple related to mobile telephone technology, including sensor-based rotation of a user interface and touch panel sensor design. Shortly before an initial determination was due, HTC and Apple executed a worldwide settlement.
