Jared W. Newton

Jared Newton is a first chair trial lawyer who specializes in high-stakes intellectual property disputes. He represents plaintiffs and defendants across a range of technologies, from artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and software to self-driving vehicles, jet engines, and medical devices. Jared joined Quinn Emanuel in 2011, as a founding member of the firm’s Washington, DC office and industry-leading Section 337 practice at the U.S. International Trade Commission. Today, he splits time between Washington and Wilmington, where he leads the firm’s Delaware intellectual property practice.

Jared has achieved significant trial success over the course of his career. Recently, he served as lead counsel for TVision and won a complete defense verdict in a patent trial involving audience-measurement technology. Jared examined five of the ten witnesses at trial, including a key cross examination of the opposing technical expert. He then delivered the closing argument, after which the jury deliberated for two hours before returning a verdict of non-infringement. On behalf of plaintiffs, Jared has won judgments and mid-trial settlements totaling hundreds of millions of dollars. He represented Waymo against Uber in a landmark trade secret trial related to self-driving vehicle technology. The case settled mid-trial, with Waymo receiving Uber equity then valued at $245 million. In the ADR space, Jared recently secured an arbitration victory for Hesai, in which the tribunal enforced a license agreement that shielded the company from infringement lawsuits and awarded it $6.4 million in fees and costs.

At the appellate level, Jared routinely appears at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, where he has argued as lead counsel in four appeals and served as principal brief author in several others. Leveraging his experience as a patent examiner, Jared also represents petitioners and patent owners in post-grant review proceedings at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.

Jared received his law degree from The George Washington University Law School, and his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech.
