In September, Quinn Emanuel organized a weekend-long mock bankruptcy trial at the Montauk Yacht Club to help younger lawyers hone their trial skills in complex Chapter 11 cases. The firm’s bankruptcy group founder Susheel Kirpalani took on the fictional role of Sunil Kianti, an ambitious inventor whose start-up was facing bankruptcy after a product malfunction led to multiple lawsuits and attorney general investigations. Five teams of associates and counsel represented various stakeholders, from lenders to state attorneys general, with each team tasked with exposing the weaknesses in their opponents' positions. The exercise included competing expert testimony from real investment bankers from PJT Partners’ next generation of talent and former Bankruptcy Judge Shelley C. Chapman, creating a highly detailed and immersive learning experience. Quinn Emanuel departed from the standard treatment of educational seminars and considered associate and counsel time spent on this exercise billable-equivalent given the substantial time commitment required of participants. Feedback from associates praised the hands-on experience and the chance to tackle a complex, multifaceted scenario before a real judge.
