Quinn Emanuel partners Alex Spiro, Asher Griffin and Kathleen Sullivan have been named ‘Litigators of the Week’ by The American Lawyer after convincing a federal jury to award damages that were 98% lower than an earlier damage verdict against our client Tesla.
The case arose in 2021 and was brought against Tesla by a former worker who claimed he had experienced a racially hostile environment while working in the Tesla factory in Fremont, California. A first jury awarded him $137 million before Quinn Emanuel came into the case. After taking over the case, a Quinn Emanuel team led by Kathleen Sullivan convinced District Judge William Orrick III that the award was “excessive” and that Tesla was entitled to new trial unless the plaintiff accepted an award reduced to $15 million. The plaintiff rejected the reduced award and the case proceeded to retrial, where a Quinn Emanuel team led by Alex Spiro and Asher Griffin along with Dan Posner and Mari Henderson convinced the second jury to award $3.2 million - just 2.3% of the earlier award.
