Jennifer Barrett is Co-Managing Partner of the New York Office. She is responsible for a wide variety of trial and appellate matters -- in areas of law such as securities, insurance, reinsurance, corporate governance, data privacy, intellectual property and trade secrets, unfair competition, consumer protection, employment, and defamation-- on behalf of clients engaged in a diverse range of businesses, including: banking and other financial services, insurance, publishing, television news, on-line marketing and services, consumer products, music distribution, transportation and health care.
- Representing a major private equity fund in Delaware Chancery Court in a dispute arising out of portfolio company corporate governance and exit rights.
- Successfully represented AIG by obtaining dismissal of consolidated policyholder class actions alleging RICO violations arising out of historic workers compensation premium underreporting allegations.
- Defending American International Group, Inc. (“AIG”) in multiple policyholder class actions pending in federal courts in New York, South Carolina, Massachusetts and California alleging premium overcharges resulting from financial reporting errors.
- Defended AIG in multi-billion-dollar RICO class action brought by competing workers compensation insurance carriers as well as in parallel 50-state regulatory enforcement proceeding.
- Representing Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company and Babson Capital Management, as well as various company officers, in shareholder derivative action arising out of portfolio company merger transactions and related stock agreements.
- Represented Morgan Stanley in multiple federal and state regulatory investigations and enforcement actions arising out of data privacy breach.
- Represented Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company in multiple securities cases against bank issuers and other parties arising out of RMBS investments.
- Representing Morgan Stanley and affiliated entities in multiple related actions pending in New York, Delaware and Louisiana courts arising out of complex real estate investment transaction.
- Defending Morgan Stanley in multiple employment related disputes dealing with complex deferred compensation and related issues, including successful defense through trial of high-profile eight-figure claims brought by senior commodities trader.
- Represented AIG in Delaware shareholder derivative action arising out of AIG's relationships with various C.V. Starr entities.
- Served as litigation and strategic counsel for AIG in multi-pronged dispute with former AIG CEO Maurice R. Greenberg, C.V. Starr & Co., Inc. and various Starr affiliates concerning the ownership of more than $1 billion in insurance and reinsurance business – including multiple federal and state court actions and arbitrations involving issues of insurance, agency, corporate governance, trademarks and employment.
- Represented Morgan Stanley in highly publicized matter that included the defeat of a preliminary injunction sought against Morgan Stanley and the new senior management of Morgan Stanley’s global wealth management operations.
