Preeminent Plaintiff-Side Litigation Expertise and Wildfire Litigation Practice
As a firm founded in Los Angeles in 1986, Quinn Emanuel has deep roots in our community and has achieved stellar results for our clients in California and beyond. We excel in wildfire litigation. Since 2007, we have investigated and litigated some of the largest fires on the West Coast:
- We represent over 2,000 survivors of the Eaton and Palisades wildfires -- fires that have devastated our communities including our clients, partners, colleagues, and neighbors. As the only Am Law 100 law firm to represent survivors of these fires, we are determined to ensure that our clients receive adequate compensation for the harms they have suffered.
- In Eaton, we are suing Southern California Edison for a variety of claims including inverse condemnation, trespass, negligence and violations of regulations aimed at protecting public safety. Our firm serves on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee and in numerous other leadership roles.
- Similarly, in the Palisades, we are members of the leadership team and recently persuaded the Court to approve moving forward with a Master Complaint that addresses all the claims against the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power and other Defendants. We intend to pursue these claims for both wildfires aggressively.
- We represented over 100 homeowners in pursuing their insurance recoveries and assessing their losses in connection with the 2018 Woolsey Fire in Malibu, which burned 96,949 acres, destroyed 1,643 structures, killed three people and led to the evacuation of 300,000 people.
- We currently represent Kamehameha Schools, Hawaii's largest private landowner, in the Lahaina Fire in Maui, Hawaii. The fires, alleged to have been started by Hawaiian Electric Company's power lines, are reported to have caused over 100 deaths, personal injury, and property damage throughout Maui. The parties, including Kamehameha Schools, have reached a tentative global settlement pending court approvals.
- We represented Pacific Gas and Electric Company in the Butte Fire (vegetation into powerlines).
- We represented San Diego Gas and Electric Company in the Witch Creek Fire (powerlines contacting each other), Guejito Fire (electrical facilities contacting communication facilities), and Rice Canyon Fire (vegetation into powerlines).
Law360 has repeatedly recognized Quinn Emanuel as among the four law firms in-house counsel least like to oppose. And we are often labeled "the" most feared. We understand why. We have tried over 2,500 cases firmwide across various matters and won nearly 86% of them. Our lawyers firm-wide have won approximately $80 billion for our clients through aggregate judgments and settlements in a variety of practice areas including five 9-figure jury verdicts, over 40 9-figure settlements, and 20 10-figure settlements. Our proven ability to take high-stakes plaintiffs' cases to trial—and to win at trial—presents our adversaries with a significant risk they must consider from day one, often resulting in better settlements for our clients. Of course prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome, and any recovery depends on the particular facts and circumstances of each case. But we are vigorous advocates who will work hard to position our clients for the best possible outcome for their matters.
