Even for a law firm that does a lot of winning, Quinn Emanuel had a spectacular run of victories last week, delivering seven big wins for our clients. Perhaps we’ve mentioned it.
Now we’ve been honored – for the sixth time this year – with a Litigator of the Week recognition for the $5.7 billion award we secured for Taction Technology against Apple. It’s the largest patent infringement jury verdict in U.S. history.
Law.com, which confers the honor, named Tigran Guledjian, Scott L. Watson, and Lance Yang as Litigators of the Week for the landmark verdict.
Guledjian is Co-Chair of the firm’s National Intellectual Property Litigation Practice. Watson has litigated some of the largest intellectual property disputes in history. Yang has extensive experience trying bet-the-company cases involving intellectual property.
You can read about how they achieved this feat in Law.com’s Q&A here.
The verdict came on September 25, in the same week Quinn Emanuel delivered a $90 million verdict against the world’s largest pharmaceutical company and a complete defense win that saved three Silicon Valley founders from losing everything. Read about that rapid-fire run of wins here.
We also earned a thoughtful and engaging piece on the week’s results in Bloomberg Law, which subscribers can read here.
The jurors in the Taction case, in San Diego federal court, found that certain iPhones and Apple Watches that use Apple’s Taptic Engine – the technology behind the vibrations you feel in your iPhone and Apple Watch – infringe two patents owned by our client. Taction is a San Diego company that designs haptic transducers for various applications, including headphones and gaming headsets.
The case had been stayed previously when the district court granted Apple summary judgment. Our team, in the unflagging Quinn Emanuel tradition, persuaded the Federal Circuit to bring it back. The verdict caps a 5 1/2-year fight that began when Taction sued in 2021.
